From James A. Harder, MD, FRCS(C), Division of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery:
Robert Bouma has been working in the Orthotics Department at the Alberta Children’s Hospital for two years. During that time my experience with him has been primarily in bracing for scoliosis as well as AFOs and KAFOs.
Rob is pleasant to work with, accomodating, and a good problem solver. He has excellent patient rapport, with the parents and the child.
During Rob’s experience at the Alberta Children’s Hospital he also attended the Boston Brace Course. His work in the Scoliosis Clinic with the TLSOs has been excellent and he has made a significant difference to the quality of care through bracing techniques. In general, I have found Rob very pleasant to work with and have found that he is meticulous and produces high quality orthotics.
From Simon G. Goldstein, MD, FRCS(C), Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon:
I am a Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. I have worked with Rob Bouma for the last 2 years or so since he started work here. I have worked with him in a variety of clinics, including regular orthopaedic clinics and neuromotor and neuromuscular clinics. He has provided orthotic support for routine orthopaedic patients, cerebral palsy patients and muscular dystrophy patients for us. He has worked well in the clinics, especially in those in which there has been a multi-diciplinary approach. He has provided excellent care for our patients and has gone out of his way in numerous patients to make a more appropriate brace fitting that was helpful in their care.
Rob has provided spinal orthoses for numerous patients, including those with idiopathic scoliosis, idiopathic kyphosis and neuromuscular problems. He has provided some custom braces as necessary to facilitate with care and control of curvature. He has provided upper and lower extermity bracing at our request and, as already mentioned, some of these have been relatively customized in terms of approach because of the variety and difficulty of the brace requirements in our multi-disciplinary clinic. Rob is a personable and a professional individual. He has done an excellent job of fitting in with the teams here and providing care for the patients that we have here and I will be professionally and personally sorry to see him leave his position.
From Gerhard N. Kiefer, MD, FRCS(C), Director, Paediatric, Orthopeadic Surgery and Neuromotor Clinics:
I had the privilege of working with Mr. Bouma since June 1998 to July 2000. In this two year time interval, Mr. Bouma has proven himself to be a valuable team member with excellent insight into not only orthotics but specifically patient and physician demands. He has proven himself to be open minded and creative with a willingness to cooperate in a multi-disciplinary setting. He has excellent interactive skills which permit him to listen everyone’s concerns and express his own opinion.
Mr. Bouma has excellent orthotic skills which will make him a valuable asset to the Orthotics profession in any medical setting.
